Crown and bridge restorations are dental procedures aimed at restoring the form, function, and aesthetics of damaged or missing teeth. A dental crown is essentially a 'cap' that fits over a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. It's used when the tooth is cracked, worn down, or has a large filling or has undergone a root canal treatment. Crowns can also be used to improve the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
A dental bridge, on the other hand, is a device used to replace one or more missing teeth. It 'bridges' the gap created by missing teeth using a false tooth or teeth, known as pontics. The pontic is anchored by crowns fitted onto the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap.
The process for both crowns and bridges usually involves at least two dental visits.
First Visit - Preparation: The dentist prepares the tooth or teeth by removing any decay and reshaping the tooth surface to allow for the placement of the crown or bridge. An impression of the tooth/teeth is then taken, which is sent to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of the custom crown or bridge.
Temporary Crown/Bridge: A temporary crown or bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth while the permanent restoration is being made.
Second Visit - Placement: Once the permanent crown or bridge is ready (usually after a couple of weeks), the dentist removes the temporary restoration and checks the fit and color of the permanent one. If everything is satisfactory, the new crown or bridge is cemented in place.
Crowns and bridges are durable and can last many years with proper care, significantly improving oral function and aesthetics. They are excellent solutions for restoring your smile after tooth damage or loss.
